The URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is the common addressing scheme on the Internet. The general format consists of the Scheme, Host, Port, Path, Query and Fragment. The Scheme indicates how communications will be done. This is typically HTTP, or HTTPS which is HTTP wrapped with a security layer. The Host specifies which site is being selected. The Port is occasionally used to override the default UDP or TCP port used in communications. The Path specifies what on the site is being addressed. The optional Query is commands to be performed by the Site. The optional Fragment tells the browser where to place the focus on the page. |
